Meet Marc! JP local, run enthusiast, FHR guru, and FPC board member extraordinare!

Marc Almanzan (pictured in the middle of this great Forest Hills Runners gang!) is an avid runner who has found his home in Jamaica Plain, right next to Franklin Park.  He believes that running and nature are two of the best things that we can experience for ourselves, especially amid the ultra-connected city lives we lead. He is certain that running leads to sanity, health, and self-improvement that can translate to all aspects of one's life.  Marc believes that with nature, running becomes an even deeper adventure into the self and the world, as one can truly connect while being disconnected in the woods. He is thankful to live in a community such as Jamaica Plain that has such an abundance of green space, and he is grateful to the Franklin Park Coalition for their mission to keep the park healthy and utilized by everyone who wishes to enjoy it. Meet the 2014 Franklin Park Coalition Boston Marathon Team!

We'll be formally introducing you to our 2014 Franklin Park Coalition Boston Marathon team over the next few weeks. The FPC is very excited for a locally focused team with a strong interest in the varied program areas that the fundraising will be covering. The team also includes a number of runners who were part of the 2013 Boston Marathon events--one who finished the race and others who have decided to take on the challenges and joy of running the Boston Marathon over the next few months.

Our team consists of ultramarathoners and first time marathoners. We have runners that have run around the country and the world. We have runners that have qualified for the Boston Marathon and have coached world-class athletes. Get to know the team here and visit back for personal updates.

We're looking forward to a season of creative and fun fundraisers to support the work of the FPC. Come out to Franklin Park on Thanksgiving morning and run the first annual Franklin Park Turkey Trot 5K. Join us on January 22 for our final team kickoff night at Bella Luna. We'll have all-you-can-eat gourmet pizzas and great local, raffle prizes to enjoy. Our north of Boston runners have their Third Annual Giggles Comedy Night on February 16 at Prince Pizzeria. Keep an eye on our calendar of events and join us to support the team.

You can also follow this blog for team news, run updates, and fundraising notes. We're thrilled to have such a talented team and look forward to keeping our supporters up-to-date.

General Registration Information for the 2014 Boston Marathon

From a Boston Athletic Association press release:

FOR RELEASE ON AUGUST 29, 2013 AT 10:00 A.M. ET
2014 BOSTON MARATHON REGISTRATION TO BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER 9.
FIELD SIZE SET AT 36,000 OFFICIAL ENTRANTS FOR 2014 RACE.

BOSTON -- Registration for the 2014 Boston Marathon will open on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. ET. The B.A.A. will use the same process to register qualified runners as it used in the 2012 and 2013 Marathons, allowing the fastest qualifiers to register first.
Registration will be held entirely online at www.baa.org. The qualification window for the 2014 Boston Marathon began last year on September 22, 2012.

In addition, in cooperation with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the eight cities and towns along the Boston Marathon route, the B.A.A. has set the field size for the 2014 Boston Marathon at 36,000 official entrants. The 118th Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 and will mark the 29th consecutive year that the event will have John Hancock Financial Services as its principal sponsor.

Registration will occur on a “rolling admission” schedule, beginning with the fastest qualifiers. On Monday, September 9, eligible runners who have met the qualifying standard for their age and gender by 20 minutes or more may register. On Wednesday, September 11 at 10:00 a.m. ET, if space remains, registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standard by 10 minutes or more. If space remains, registration will open on Friday, September 13 at 10:00 a.m. ET for those who have met their qualifying standard by five minutes or more. Registration will close on Saturday, September 14 at 10:00 p.m. ET.

If space remains after the first week of registration (Monday, September 9 through Saturday, September 14), then registration will re-open for all qualifiers from Monday, September 16 at 10:00 a.m. ET through Friday, September 20 at 5:00 p.m. ET. If space remains after this initial period, then on Monday, September 23 registration will re-open to anyone who meets the qualifying standards. Registration will remain open until the maximum field size is reached.
“The B.A.A. is aware of the significantly increased interest in registering for the 2014 Boston Marathon,” said B.A.A. Executive Director Tom Grilk. “The rolling admission schedule will provide runners with the fastest qualifying times in their age and gender group the ability to have their entry accepted in an orderly and systematic manner. We understand many marathoners and qualifiers want to run Boston in 2014, and we appreciate the support and patience that the running community has demonstrated because of the bombings that occurred this past Spring.”

The registration process ensures that the fastest qualifiers will be accepted first. However, achieving one’s qualifying standard does not guarantee entry. Those who are the fastest among the pool of applicants in their age and gender group will be accepted.
The registration fee for the 2014 Boston Marathon for qualifiers is $175 USD for United States residents and $225 USD for international residents.

A special registration period for the 2013 Boston Marathon began on August 19 and concludes today (August 29 at 5:00 p.m. ET) for 2013 Boston Marathon starters who reached the half marathon checkpoint or later but did not have the opportunity to cross the finish line on Boylston Street. Those 5624 runners were contacted by the B.A.A. via email; thus far, more than 4,500 entries have been received.

For the last several months, the B.A.A. has worked with state and municipal agencies and public safety officials to establish a field size of 36,000 entrants for the 2014 Boston Marathon. In 1996, the Centennial Boston Marathon had a field size of 38,708 entrants and 35,868 finishers. "Interested runners have been remarkably respectful and cooperative as we worked towards what will be an important day in the history of the race, the sport and the City of Boston,” said Grilk. “The B.A.A. offers special thanks and gratitude to the town, city and state officials for the cooperation and allowances needed to conduct a special race of this size and scope."

BOSTON MARATHON REGISTRATION DATES:

Monday, September 9 - Qualifiers who have met the qualifying standard by 20 minutes, 00 seconds or faster.

Wednesday, September 11 - Qualifiers who have met the qualifying standard by 10 minutes, 00 seconds or faster (if space remains).

Friday, September 13 - Qualifiers who have met the qualifying standard by 5 minutes, 00 seconds or faster (if space remains).

Monday, September 16 - All qualifiers who have met the qualifying standard (if space remains).

Friday, September 20 - Registration closes at 5:00 p.m. ET.

If space remains after this initial period, then on Monday, September 23 registration will re-open to anyone who meets the qualifying standards on a first come, first served basis. Registration will remain open until the maximum field size is reached.

A FEW IMPORTANT NOTES:

The qualification window for the 2014 Boston Marathon began on Saturday, September 22, 2012 and will remain open until the conclusion of registration.

The Summer Youth Conservation Crew

One of the biggest pieces of the pie of the Franklin Park Coalition's Boston Marathon Team's fundraising goes to the Summer Youth Conservation Crew. The "crew" consists of 20-30 teens as well as supervisors who spend their learning about the environment and history of 527 acres of Franklin Park by caring for it each day. Besides working to preserve the park, these kids also get lessons in landscaping, gardening, landscape architecture, and managing a business as well as a chance to explore the White Mountains. For many, this is their first time exploring a wooded area, let along garnering an appreciation for it.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing stories from the Summer Youth Conservation Crew and their experiences in the park. Some are funny, some are touching, some show a passion for history and the environment, and some show an appreciation for earning real money. Some are a combination of all of these factors.

We invite you to continue to support the Summer Youth Conservation Crew and the good work of the Franklin Park Coalition. To learn more, visit www.franklinparkcoalition.org.

Moving Forward with the Franklin Park Coalition Boston Marathon Team

The events of April 15, 2013 touched each of our team members in various ways. Our speed demon, Owen, had crossed the finish line in the literal footsteps of the elites, close to 90 minutes before the bombs went off. Others had just barely made it over the famed finish line, basking in the glory of their personal win, only to turn around and see two explosions. Many were stopped at various points along the route with no clue why or what happened. Our team captain conversed with others around Washington Square about the police flying through the marathon route in their cars with no regard to the runners with the assumption that they were trying to get out of detail work…how those thoughts, feelings, and emotions changed in a heartbeat.

April 15 took something away from all of us. As a collective team, we ran hard all winter long—through brutal wind chills and while dodging snow plows. Our noses ran faster than we did. We wanted to stop at DQ in Ashland for ice cream, even though our training runs had just begun a quarter mile up the road. We made friends with the crew from the Playworks team and were taken in by the amazing staff from the Heartbreak Hill Running Company in Newton for one heck of a training run. We laughed, we cried, we shared stories.

Michelle attacked Julie while she was having her picture taken at the start—both were bundled up in hoodies, hats, and gloves—though those that ran in 2012 were not complaining about the extra layers. The skies were blue and sunny, a moment of silence for the victims of Newtown gave us a moment of clarity about the preciousness of life and how lucky we all were, and we prepared for our 26.2 mile journey as a team--with love in our hearts and smiles on our faces.

The love and smiles arguably lasted for much of our runs. The amazing staff and volunteer support at Mile 14 by the Franklin Park Coalition left not a want for any of us. M&M’s? Check. Advil? Check? PB&J? Check. Tequila? Maybe next year…

We all also had family and friends on the course and those family and friends looked out for our green and white singlets—our team—our running family. Cheers were yelled, beers were passed out, gels were anxiously tossed out by the Wicked Running Club to ensure our crew made it up Heartbreak Hill and beyond.

Beyond we all moved and continued to move. We were all in different places when the news broke—and all encouraged to just move forward. Some of us were stopped at Mile 23 and 24 where the police gave us gentle directions to Commonwealth Avenue to find our way back to Boston. Some of us were just a mile or half-mile out—just beyond the “right on, left on” that feels so good. Some of those runners moved forward beyond the bombing sites and into the Pru or into their hotels with loved ones. Hugs never felt so good.

The Franklin Park Coalition was unbelievable in checking in with our team and our families after the marathon. A true picture of calm, cool, and collected they worked through the emergency list, made sure all were ok, and updated not only our families, but our donors and FPC supporters. When a few of our runners had a friend whose husband and son were seriously hurt at the second bombing site, it was the executive director who offered to come back into the city with warm, dry clothes for her as well as hot meals. While the day of chaos continued for those runners and their friend, the FPC showed why running a marathon for a great cause is one of the greatest small-scale philanthropic decisions one can make.

Our Oregonian connection made it safely home and had a greeting of over 100 people to wish them well and show their gratitude for making it home. Craig and his friend ran in a remembrance run for Boston in their hometown area and helped moved forward with their own healing process. (http://www.kgw.com/news/local/Thousands-cross-Willamette-for-Boston-Remembrance-Run-203630051.html)

Many of us hugged our families a little tighter that night or the next day. Some of us took a walk in Franklin Park—thankful that a place like this exists in Boston and that a man named Frederick Law Olmsted wanted to create peaceful places to allow the public to escape urban strife—though I doubt April 15’s event were what he had in mind. Some of us wrote back and forth to our teammates and found comfort in the shared actions and emotions of others. We weren’t crazy for bursting into tears, feeling unusually angry, or for feeling shaken up like never before. We weren’t wrong for feeling like we were robbed of the day we worked so hard for. It was comforting to have the team we did. As Elizabeth put it, it helped to take in all of the good and the bad together.

Another runner received this letter of support from a friend: I am so relieved to see that you are both OK. I agree completely with your friends who say that today's horrible tragedy doesn't in any way diminish your incredible accomplishment. All the months of training in disgusting weather, and your stamina and determination in the race today, and Charlie's support and encouragement throughout, are so worth celebrating. I hope you can find ways to do this, even as you mourn those who died or were injured. What you have done is so very special.

All want to find a way to move forward and run again next year and we all anxiously await how the Boston Athletic Association will be handling the 1000 official charity runners that did not finish. We know what a special chance it is to be able to do what we did and how special it is to have family, friends, colleagues, and companies that support these crazy dreams of ours.

The Franklin Park Coalition keeps moving forward, too. After they got the marathon stuff put away (and all the Swedish fish eaten)  they had a busy couple of weeks finding ways to spend the $50,000+ that we raised--hiring teenagers, finalizing the Playhouse in the Park concert line-up, re-potting small trees that will be planted, and starting outreach for the annual Kite & Bike Festival.

As a team, we move forward and continue to support each other and the Franklin Park Coalition and look forward to finding ways to give back in the coming years.

FPC Boston Marathon runner Craig Kiest part of west coast Remembrance Run

2013 Franklin Park Coalition Boston Marathon Runner Craig Kiest was was part of Remembrance Run in his native Portland, OR last week. After an overwhelming greeting by family and friends when he stepped off the plane, he gathered with over 1000 local runners to pay tribute to last Monday's tragic events.

Craig Kiest said he remembers fellow runners who dropped everything to pray.“You definitely think you missed a bullet,” he said. “I’m not going to let it stop me.” Kiest is considering rejoining the team for the 2014 Boston Marathon.

2013 Franklin Park Coalition Boston Marathon Team Update

Many thanks to our followers and fans of the Franklin Park Coalition Boston Marathon Team for their continued support to our team. We are in the process of working on a "debrief" of the season and will have that posted soon. Needless to say our 2013 season was amazing--full of dedicated runners, staff, volunteers, friends and family. Unfortunately, the tragic events of April 15, 2013 marred an otherwise excellent season and picture perfect day.

We also want to thank the many that have reached out for us to consider running for the Franklin Park Coalition in 2014. At this point, we have not been contacted by the Boston Athletic Association about the amount of charity numbers we will have and are not accepting applications at this point. You are welcome to review the application on this site or at www.franklinparkcoalition.org to learn about the basics.

Feel free to contact our Marathon Charity Team Leader, Julie Arrison, at julie@franklinparkcoalition.org with any questions. Inquiries will be responded to within one week.

Again, gratitude from the Franklin Park Coalition for the massive amount of support for the 2013 team.

Making the world a better place

A note from our Marathon Charity Team Leader to the runners:

I just want to say a quick thank you to all of you for what you did yesterday. Whether you cleared the finish or not is irrelevant. You made the world a better place. For months you trained, you did outreach, and you worked your asses off for an amazing place in Boston--a peaceful "calm in the storm respite" for so many. You made a difference.

While I proud of the abilities of qualified runners, I am also extremely proud of the abilities of fundraisers and especially you guys. Your dedication and determination make this world a better place.

The staff at the FPC makes this world a better place. By giving urban youth a fighting chance at meaningful work, athletic opportunities, and education, they offer chances. By offering arts and culture on a summer night, they offer relaxation and fulfillment  By knowing and working in the park and directing others, they maintain a historic place--a Boston place--and a place filled with love and happiness for so many.

I toast each of you today, through any stress and anguish you feel, for making the world a better place and am a proud team leader and team member of the Franklin Park Coalition.

Another Round of Cornhole for the Coalition! Join Margaret on March 3!

FPC Boston Marathon team member Margaret Newell has been putting in hours of training to take down her opponents one-by-one. There has been blood. There has been sweat. There has been tears. If you want to see the fruits of her effort, Marathon Monday ain't got nothing on Cornhole Sunday.

If you haven't had the chance to come out and support the Franklin Park Coalition yet, this is a great opportunity. The Baseball Tavern will have spring training games playing, cold beer flowing, and fun for all ages.

The FPC team is lucky to have Margaret aboard. She has run two Boston Marathons with the Wedieko Children's Services team and is a guidance counselor at Everett High School. She has seen first hand the impact of parks and open space for teens and is excited to support the FPC in helping teens gain meaningful summer work and health and fitness opportunities.

If you can't come to cornhole, be sure to check out Maragret's fundraising page to learn more:

Second Year Runner Carleen Tucker Exceeds Fundraising Goal

Carleen Tucker is a superstar. The Franklin Park Coalition is thrilled to have her back on the Boston Marathon team for a second year and also participating as a board member.

Carleen has exceeded her fundraising goal with a combination of private donations from family and friends and also using the Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare "mini-grant" program that allows employees to donate up to $500.00 on an annual basis to a nonprofit of their choice.

Carleen's story and connection to the park is compelling. Her husband Mark is born and raised in Roxbury and credits his time in Franklin Park as literally saving his life by giving him a safe place to play and grow up. Together, the couple has raised their children in the sunshine of the park between picnics and Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park nights. Like all of our runners, Carleen believes strongly in the programming goals of the FPC, but has seen the impact first hand of the good work of the park in generations of her family.

Join the Franklin Park Coalition in congratulating our fabulous board member and marathoning mama in exceeding expectations!

We also invite you to check out last year's feature on Carleen's Year One Experience from the Boston Globe Magazine: http://www.bostonglobe.com/magazine/2012/03/17/runners-for-long-haul/buTsnC4I9oMSgj1qgUvwaJ/story.html

Oregon Runner Craig Kiest Exceeds Fundraising Goal for the Franklin Park Coalition

Choosing a landscape architect to run for the Franklin Park Coalition seemed a natural choice. Frederick Law Olmsted is considered the father of American landscape architecture and is the designer of Franklin Park. Olmsted considered Franklin Park to be one of his greatest works of art, combining decades of experience in planning with proximity of the harbor and the Great Blue Hills.

For Craig Kiest (in orange on the left), choosing Franklin Park was more than a tribute to the fine work that Olmsted completed more than a century ago. For this seasoned runner who is close to completing 50 marathons in 50 states, he sees the health and fitness benefits that come from a safe place to train and play. Through his travels he has seen many places and believes in the good work that the Franklin Park Coalition is doing to provide fitness opportunities but also in teaching future generations the importance of preserving parks and open space.

Craig's donation was fufilled by the Richard and Janet Geary Foundation. The foundation focuses on giving to arts, youth support, healthcare research  higher education, and regional and national policy. Voted one of the top 50 Oregon foundations, the gift is much appreciated.
